Care Instructions for Quilts
Seeing a quilt in use is, in my opinion, the most enjoyable aspect of making one. I like the idea of having quilts all about the house that guests can use. On whatever—chairs, couches, footstools—they are hung. They are simple to grab and cuddle with.
There comes a time when that quilt needs to be washed if you believe in using them. The quilt picks up a few smudges, fingerprints, wonderful nibbles, and other things over time.
How do you behave? Let’s talk about washing and caring for your quilt today.
I am aware that some people claim they will never wash a quilt. While this may be true for quilts made as family heirlooms, others may discover that a good washing is necessary.
Washing by hand or machine
Consider the following points before putting the quilt in the washer:
Does the quilt contain any material that might bleed? When water touches red and blue, they become notorious hues that blend with other colors. Before washing the fabric, you might want to test a little area of it to make sure you don’t wind up with more labor to do if they do bleed.
Exists any handiwork that could fail? I wouldn’t wash a quilt if it is entirely needle turn applique without any fusible below. If there is too much commotion, the applique may come off and the threads and stitching may be ripped.
What about appliqué and embroidery? Are there many? Would it be vulnerable when being washed?
The best way to hand wash a quilt
1) To brighten a quilt, add 1/2 cup vinegar to a clean, large tub or sink filled with cold water, gentle liquid detergent, perfume- and dye-free.
2) Submerge the quilt in water and stir it around gently. To get the soap off the quilt, empty the tub after 10 minutes and refill it with new water.
3) After removing the wet quilt, use a white sheet as a “feeling” while it dries. This quilt will be really hefty! Be careful! Avoid pulling on the quilt as this may cause the threads and stitching to pull. Lay the quilt inside a bed sheet, then peel the sheet away from the quilt rather than the quilt itself.
4) Place the quilt on a layer of dry towels, cover it, and roll it up. When the quilt is entirely dry, gently push on it, unravel it, and put it flat on another set of dry towels. Laying outside, but not in the sun or under a tree, will help you dry faster.
How to Wash a Quilt in the Machine:
Make sure your machine’s drum has enough space to accommodate the size of the quilt you are washing. When wet, these can become uneven and need to be thrown away.
1) Wash quilts in cold water with a mild detergent designed for quilts
2) use the delicate cycle.
3) Air dry the quilt or take it outside to dry by gathering it once more into a “sling.”
Never hang wet quilts since doing so will soon damage them. When I stitch a quilt, I make sure that it can be washed for the most part. I am a quilter who doesn’t require much upkeep. I don’t do fussy work, and if I do, I make sure it can withstand a good wash and is attached to the quilt top.
Due to the age of the user, some quilts—such as baby quilts or twin quilts—need to be washed more frequently than others. Before using it or storing it, make sure it is completely dry. It shouldn’t start to smell musty. What kind of care do you provide your quilt? Have a preferred soap or technique? Please tell us about it.
