With Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham, Antonio Conte’s team defeated Marseille and won its first match back in the Champions League.

Even though they were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Chancel Mbemba was sent for a professional foul on Son Heung-min, Marseille vexed Spurs for significant portions of this first Group D game.
With 14 minutes remaining, Richarlison headed in an Ivan Perisic cross to give Spurs their first goal since Richarlison’s £60 million summer transfer from Everton.
Five minutes later, Richarlison added a second goal with an even stronger header, this time meeting Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s cross at the far post to past Pau Lopez in goal for Marseille and give Spurs the victory.
Richarlison, who helped Everton narrowly avoid relegation last season by playing a significant role, joined Spurs to experience the Champions League stage.
The Brazilian was a hero at Goodison Park and, unusually for a high-profile transfer, fans who had grown to love him sent him out with nearly universal congratulations.
The 25-year-old was a strong addition to the dynamic Spurs front line that already had Son, the promising Dejan Kulusevski, and England captain Harry Kane – the kind of player Conte desired in his pursuit of significant prizes.
Richarlison has had to wait, but his early contributions, such as his disputed ball juggling in the most recent victory over Nottingham Forest, have already made him popular with Spurs supporters.
And he solidified that reputation here with two significant goals that made sure Spurs emerged from a difficult night with a critical victory.
Although Richarlison’s antics can be annoying at times, there is no denying his talent and the two headers that decided this game showed exactly what he provides to Spurs.
Spurs may not have always been visually appealing, but Conte has given the team a steely will that allows them to perform well even when they are not at their best.
The same was true here, as they lacked rhythm and momentum for protracted stretches, with Marseille frequently being the more calm side in possession up until Mbemba’s dismissal.
He had to leave, which gave Spurs the initiative. They persisted in their efforts and eventually found Richarlison to be the game-winner.
On the sidelines, Conte erupted in jubilation, seeming to take just as much delight in the manner of victory as he would from one won through fluid play.
Even though they didn’t reach the summit, Spurs have again demonstrated why they are a different animal under the ferociously motivated Italian.
