Human and space surrealist photo series that transcends space and time

In the vast universe, each planet is just a tiny speck of dust, and humans are even smaller. But in just a few thousand short years, humanity has grown tremendously. Human thinking has evolved, bringing a series of scientific research, helping us to reach beyond the surface of the Earth to observe and into the vast universe.

These scientific theories also inspired the art world. There are many books and movies in the sci-fi genre. Favorite storylines often revolve around space travel, special relativity and the speed of light, or aliens.

Stylist Yanjun Wang is also a movie enthusiast about space science. In particular, after watching the film 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick, she had a burning desire to make a fashion photo shoot on this topic.

“I wanted to interpret the feeling of space and time through fashion,” says Yanjun Wang. Her idea is to recreate the image of prehistoric humans through the perspective of aliens.

“Special relativity analyzes that the light of the stars we see does not come from reality, but from the past. The speed of light is also the distance traveled by that beam of light. If so, then when aliens observe us, they will not see our great development now, but only ancient images from thousands of years ago,” said Yanjun Wang.

“This can be seen as a way to attain eternal life. On the real earth, perhaps we have returned to dust. But our image is still transmitted thousands, even millions of years into the future.”

Combining these thoughts with research on documentaries, such as BBC Seven Ages of Starlight and Cosmos: Possible Worlds , Yanjun Wang made Human and Space.

Stylist Yanjun Wang collaborated with photographer Yuxian He to create surrealist-style photos. The two have a smooth cooperation because of their shared East-West style, having worked in both Beijing and London. They chose the scene as the Tianmen desert in Hebei, China. This setting is a wonder of nature, as it is a natural desert surrounded by ordinary fertile soil. This smallest desert in China is also the setting for many films in the mainland.
