Paris Saint-Germain easily defeated Nantes 3-0 on Saturday to maintain their lead atop the Ligue 1 rankings as they prepared for their Champions League debut. Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the victory.

Before being substituted by Neymar as coach Christophe Galtier tried to save the pair for Tuesday’s match against Juventus, France star Mbappe scored twice after the break to bring his season total to seven goals. PSG, which has 16 points after six games, is ahead of second-placed Marseille, which defeated AJ Auxerre 2-0 away, on goal differential.
After being set up by Lionel Messi in the 18th minute, Mbappe scored PSG’s first goal by outmuscling Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont from inside the box. Six minutes later, Fabio Da Silva was given a straight red card for a risky tackle on Vitinha, bringing the number of players for the hosts down to 10.
Nine minutes into the second half, Mbappe completed a swift counterattack to double the advantage. The 23-year-old passed the ball to Messi in the box, who passed it to Mbappe, who tapped it in at the near post. Nuno Mendes then increased the score to 3-0 in the 68th minute by scoring after Neymar’s shot had hit the post and rebounded.
This was PSG’s 24th goal in Ligue 1 this year. Olympique Lyonnais, who have a game remaining, moved up to third place on 13 points following a convincing 5-0 victory against fits of anger thanks to a brace from Karl Toko Ekambi and a goal from Alexandre Lacazette. With 13 points as well, Lens is in fourth place and will be at Stade de Reims on Sunday.
Earlier, Alexis Sanchez demonstrated his value with his third goal since joining Marseille as a free agent from Inter Milan over the offseason, as Marseille maintained their near-perfect start with a convincing victory against promoted Auxerre. Four days before their Champions League trip to Tottenham Hotspur in London, Cengiz Under caught the eye with a superb performance in the first half. Igor Tudor’s team prevailed thanks to an early Gerson goal and a late tally from replacement Sanchez.
