Tuchel’s dismissal may have surprised some people, but his actions on the sidelines have been symptomatic of a larger problem at the team he has been leading.
Timeline for Tuchel’s 2022–2023 season
During the preseason tour in Los Angeles and following his players’ friendlies against the United States, he was irritable. That complaint about a lack of energy from them was echoed after the Dinamo Zagreb loss.
Tuchel’s win percentage in the last 16 Premier League contests, from April until the start of this season, had fallen to 44%. Chelsea is now ninth in the Premier League form table, trailing Brighton, Brentford, and Newcastle throughout that time.
Now we are informed that he had lost the board’s and, more importantly, his players’ confidence, which could account for a perceived lack of hunger. Following the invasion of Ukraine, attention was focused on the club’s ownership by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, and Tuchel guided Chelsea through one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s history.
Government sanctions were put in place against the club starting in March while a new owner was sought until the £4.25 billion buyout was finished at the end of May.
Tuchel was able to lead Chelsea to a third-place finish in the Premier League, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup finals, losing both to Liverpool on penalties, despite the ongoing ownership troubles.
With a record-breaking transfer window this summer, the German manager collaborated with Boehly to rebuild the team.

Rio Ferdinand, a former defender for Manchester United and England, referred to Boehly’s decision to fire Tuchel as a “huge statement” that “doesn’t make sense.”
“Chelsea has finally made its intentions clear. It’s a huge proclamation from Todd Boehly and his new administration. It brings up the question, “Where will they go?” Do they already have someone in mind?” said Ferdinand.
“everyone who enters at this time. It appears to be a negative for Tuchel and his record. He is a responsible manager. I speak to all the players, and they all praise him. He is direct and sincere. He is certain about his playing style. I don’t comprehend it.”
The departure of Tuchel from the team, according to former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin, “is a surprise but not a complete shock.”
We thought Tuchel was a good manager and a good person, Nevin said to BBC Radio 5 Live. “This season, they have performed poorly away from home.
“I’m not sure if that’s because Tuchel hasn’t been able to get the greatest performance from them or if Boehly and the new owners simply decided to bring in their own man.
“After all, they’ve changed a lot in 100 days.”
For his next position, Nevin advises Boehly to seek closer to home: “I’ve often believed in the past there must be a chance that Emma Hayes will acquire a large job. I believe some people will discuss it and wish she does land that position in the future. She is excellent.
David Moyes, the manager of West Ham, expressed his “great surprise” at Tuchel’s dismissal.
I want managers to continue in their positions, so I’m disappointed, he added. “It’s a challenging profession, but I believe we all recognise that it most likely affects us at some point.
He is a very seasoned manager, but if he decides not to work, I don’t think he will be unemployed for very long.
